About notex
notex is a phone app that turns a PDF of your handwritten notes into LaTeX source you can edit and a compiled PDF you can read. It is coming soon to Android and iOS.
How it works
-
Put your notes in a PDF
Scan or photograph your pages into one PDF with your phone’s document scanner or any scanning app. It can be up to 25 MB and 50 pages.
-
Start a project
Choose the PDF in notex and name the project. If you like, set how much structure to add, from following your own layout closely to reorganizing it, and describe your notation, such as “vectors in bold,
\mathbb{R}for the reals”. Then tap Convert. -
Get LaTeX and a PDF back
An AI model reads your pages and writes the LaTeX, and notex compiles it into a PDF. If you allow notifications, notex tells you when it’s done. Read the PDF in the app, or share the .tex file to keep working on it in any LaTeX editor.
What you get
- A .tex file with a title page, a table of contents and a running header with the project’s name.
- Sections, with theorems, definitions, examples and proofs in their own LaTeX environments.
- Diagrams and plots redrawn in TikZ and pgfplots where the model can; anything it can’t redraw is described in a comment.
- A PDF compiled with pdflatex. If the LaTeX doesn’t compile, the conversion counts as failed and you get the credit back, but the .tex file is kept so you can fix it yourself.

\section{Linear maps}
\begin{definition}
\textbf{Kernel.} For a linear
map $T\colon V \to W$,
\[ \ker T = \{\, v \in V :
Tv = 0 \,\}. \]
\end{definition}
\begin{theorem}
\textbf{Rank--nullity.} If $V$ is
finite-dimensional, then
\[ \dim V = \dim\ker T
+ \typo{\dim\operatorname{im} T}. \]
\end{theorem}
Compiled PDF
\typo{…}, which prints in red, so you know what to check. The compiled page is real pdflatex output of this source with the preamble notex uses, on a smaller page and in a darker red so it is easier to read.Each conversion uses one credit, and new accounts start with a few free ones. The support page has the details and the daily limit.
Your notes and your account
- Sign in with Google, or with Apple on iOS. notex has no passwords.
- Your pages are read by Claude, Anthropic’s AI model, running on Amazon Bedrock, only to convert them. Your documents are not used to train models.
- The app has no ads, analytics or tracking.
- Delete a project, or your whole account and everything in it, from the app whenever no conversion is running.
Read the privacy policy, or how to delete your notex account.
Coming soon
notex is not in the App Store or on Google Play yet. When it is, the links will be on this site. Until then, the support page answers common questions.
